  • IGP Usman Baba Ordered Arrested by Court

IGP Usman Baba Ordered Arrested by Court for Disobeying Reinstatement OrderIn a significant development, the National Industrial Court has issued an arrest order against Inspector General of Police (IGP) Usman Alkali and the Force Secretary, AIG Hafeez Inuwa. The order was given due to their alleged failure to comply with a court directive to reinstate police officers who were graduates of Course 33, 34, and 35 from the police academy. The affected officers took their grievances to Justice Oyebiola Oyewumi, who presided over the case, citing non-compliance by the IGP. They revealed that since the judgment was delivered on April 19, 2022, the IGP and other defendants had yet to adhere to the court’s order. Journalists in Akure were provided with a copy of the court order, which expressed Justice Oyewumi’s disappointment in the IGP for disregarding the court’s authority, despite receiving counsel from relevant stakeholders within the police force.

“It is on record of this court that the court delivered a judgment in this case on 19/4/2022 and ordered that the judgment creditors/applicants should be reinstated forthwith. It is on record of this court also that the Police Service Commission the statutory body that is vested with the power to appoint, promote and discipline the judgment creditors/applicants had ordered the Inspector General of Police to comply with the judgment of this court.

It is equally noteworthy that the CP, Legal, the Head of Department of the Nigerian Police Force had also issued a legal advice urging the Inspector General of Police to comply with the order of this court vide a letter dated and the Inspector General of Police received it on 27/7/2022 yet he has refused to obey or comply with the judgment of this court.

This is an officer of the Federal Republic of Nigeria who swore on oath to uphold the rule of law and same law he has now failed or refused to obey. It is also of importance to state that this court has given ample opportunities to him and the Force Secretary to appear before this court and show cause why they are not to be held to be in contempt of this court, the record of the court evinces that they have both been served the enrolment of order of this court severally yet they both deem it fit to flout the order of this court and desecrated this hallowed chamber and temple of justice.

Justice is not only for the affluent, it is indeed for the poor and vulnerable also. I pause to say that I wonder what type of head of an enforcement agency like the police, the Inspector General of Police is, if he finds it so difficult or so difficult it seems for him to obey a simple order of court. I also wonder the type of example he is laying for his officers if he as the head of the Nigerian Police Force has chosen/ elected to flagrantly take the law into his advised by the Police Service Commission and his own officer, the CP, Legal to comply. This I must say is preposterous and appalling.

It is in the light of all stated which are in sync with the record of this court that I hold the Inspector General of Police Usman Alkali Baba and the Force Secretary, AIG Hafeez Inuwa for being in contempt of this court, they are to be arrested and be produced before this Court for necessary action.”

The court adjourned the case to October 9, 2023.

  • Inter-Family Marriage in Nigeria

Inter-family marriage, also known as kin endogamy, is a practice that exists within certain tribes in Africa. While it may be considered taboo in many African cultures, there are exceptions where inter-family marriage occurs. It is important to note that this practice is not representative of the entire African continent, but rather specific tribes or communities within Africa.

Kin endogamy refers to the marriage between siblings, which has been observed in various cultures worldwide. Although this practice deviates from the generally accepted universal incest taboo, sociologists, anthropologists, and psychologists have put forth several theories to explain this phenomenon, including the demographic, indifference, repression, and evolution theories. Scholars have extensively discussed the topic of kin endogamy.

One nation known for practicing inter-family marriage is China. Chinese culture embraces kin endogamy more than any other nation, as they do so to preserve their lineage and expand their family.

In Nigeria, the majority of tribes and religions practice exogamous marriages, where individuals are encouraged to marry outside their immediate family. However, there are a few tribes and cultures in Nigeria that still practice endogamy and kin endogamy. Examples of such tribes include the Fulani and Etulo tribes.

The Fulani people are known for their nomadic and pastoral lifestyle. They primarily herd cattle, goats, and sheep, and they often separate themselves from local agricultural populations. For a Fulani family, owning around 100 cattle is sufficient to sustain their livelihood. While they generally do not engage in farming unless there is a shortage of livestock, they reside in small villages and constantly move in search of greener pastures for their cattle.

The Etulo tribe, on the other hand, is predominantly found in the central Nigerian states of Benue and Taraba. It is believed that they migrated from the former Kwarrafa kingdom and settled in Adi, which is now part of the present-day Buruku and Katsina Ala Local Government areas of Benue State. The Etulo people are primarily engaged in farming and fishing activities.

Both the Fulani and Etulo tribes practice inter-family marriages, specifically first-cousin and uncle-niece unions. This practice is rooted in their belief that such marriages help preserve their bloodline, which they consider to be pure. The objective behind these marriages is to multiply their kin and assert dominance within their respective communities.

It is important to note that the Fulani and Etulo tribes are not the only tribes in Nigeria practicing kin endogamy. There are other tribes, such as the Kambari people of Birni Amina and Acer communities in Niger State, who also engage in this practice, although it is not as prevalent as among the Fulani and Etulo tribes.

In summary, inter-family marriage, or kin endogamy, is practiced in certain tribes in Africa, including specific tribes in Nigeria like the Fulani and Etulo tribes. These tribes engage in such marriages to preserve their bloodline, multiply their kin, and assert dominance within their communities. However, it is important to emphasize that this practice is not representative of the entire African culture, as most tribes in Africa do not practice inter-family marriage.

The Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development has issued a warning regarding the safety of ponmo consumption, citing a dangerous virus outbreak. The concern arises from the recent outbreak of Anthrax in neighboring countries within the West African sub-region.

The outbreak of Anthrax was initially reported in northern Ghana, near the borders of Burkina Faso and Togo, thereby posing a potential threat to the entire sub-region.

    The statement read;

“The disease which has claimed some lives, is a bacterial disease that affects both animals and man, that is a zoonotic disease. Anthrax spores are naturally found in the soil and commonly affect domestic and wild animals.

“People can get infected with Anthrax spores if they come in contact with infected animals or contaminated animal products.
