Grammy Awards adds Best African Music Performance, two other Category

The organizers of the Grammy Awards have introduced several new categories for recognition at the 66th Annual Grammy Awards, including Best African Music Performance.

In addition to this exciting addition, the Recording Academy has also announced the inclusion of two other categories:

Best Alternative Jazz Album and Best Pop Dance Recording.Furthermore, as part of their efforts to streamline the awards process, the Recording Academy has decided to move the existing categories of Producer of the Year, Non-Classical, and Songwriter of the Year, Non-Classical to the general field.

These category additions and amendments were voted on and approved during the Recording Academy’s most recent semiannual Board of Trustees meeting, which took place last month.

Harvey Mason Jr., CEO of the Recording Academy, expressed his satisfaction with these changes in a statement. He emphasized that the new categories reflect the organization’s commitment to actively listen and respond to feedback from the music community.

He also highlighted the importance of accurately representing a diverse range of relevant musical genres while staying aligned with the ever-evolving musical landscape.

The introduction of the Best African Music Performance category is a significant recognition of recordings that incorporate unique local expressions from across the African continent.

The Academy clarified that this category encompasses various genres such as Afrobeat, Afro-fusion, Afro Pop, Afrobeats, Alte, Amapiano, Bongo Flava, Genge, Kizomba, Chimurenga, High Life, Fuji, Kwassa, Ndombolo, Mapouka, Ghanaian Drill, Afro-House, South African Hip-Hop, and Ethio Jazz, among others.
