Five Travellers die as car plunges into canal in Kogi State
Tragedy struck in Kogi State as a car carrying five individuals plunged into a canal, resulting in the loss of their lives. The unfortunate incident occurred in Yagba West Local Government Area, and it was confirmed by the local government chairman, Hon. Pius Kolawole, on Saturday, May 28, 2023. The incident took place at approximately 4:30 PM on Friday.
According to reports, the victims had attended a burial ceremony in Oga, a small community, and were on their way back to Lokoja when the accident occurred. The joyous mood of the occasion quickly turned into devastation as the car veered off the road and fell into the canal, claiming the lives of all five occupants.
Investigations into the incident revealed that the cause of the accident was attributed to over speeding. The driver’s reckless disregard for the speed limit led to the loss of control over the vehicle, causing it to plunge into the canal. The force of the impact resulted in fatal injuries for everyone on board.
Upon receiving news of the tragedy, Hon. Pius Kolawole expressed his condolences to the families of the deceased and assured them of the local government’s support during this difficult time. The bodies of the victims have been transported to the morgue, where they will await further arrangements for their final resting place.
The incident serves as a tragic reminder of the importance of adhering to traffic regulations and exercising caution while on the road. Over speeding poses a significant risk not only to the driver but also to the passengers and other road users. The local government and relevant authorities may take this unfortunate event as an opportunity to raise awareness about road safety and emphasize the need for responsible driving to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future.
